Homographs, Spelling and Meanings

Homographs are all about meanings! It is all about using the same word in different contexts. The picture above gives a great example of words and pictures used to convey messages in different contexts! The 'rock' has two meanings. Firstly, it is used to refer to the solid mass of minerals and secondly, it is an expression used to show admiration, gratitude or affection. In a similar manner the word 'rule' is used to mean to govern or have control over someone and  a strip of wood or metal that is used to measure lengths. So you see, it all depends on what you're talking about!

I created a set of dual picture cards that depict words that can be used in different contexts. Many of the 135 words that I chose can be used in more than two contexts, however, I only depicted two contexts per word. Your kids can use these picture cards to spark their writing both in vocabulary units and in creative writing. I also included two graphic organizers for extended practice.
