Homographs, Spelling and Meanings

Homographs are all about meanings! It is all about using the same word in different contexts. The picture above gives a great example of words and pictures used to convey messages in different contexts! The 'rock' has two meanings. Firstly, it is used to refer to the solid mass of minerals and secondly, it is an expression used to show admiration, gratitude or affection. In a similar manner the word 'rule' is used to mean to govern or have control over someone and  a strip of wood or metal that is used to measure lengths. So you see, it all depends on what you're talking about!

I created a set of dual picture cards that depict words that can be used in different contexts. Many of the 135 words that I chose can be used in more than two contexts, however, I only depicted two contexts per word. Your kids can use these picture cards to spark their writing both in vocabulary units and in creative writing. I also included two graphic organizers for extended practice.

Daily and Monthy Behavior Chart

From day one it is a good idea to begin to mold and shape those behaviors that are appropriate for your classroom and to taper those that are not going to be tolerated. There are so many behavior systems around both commercially and otherwise. I actually have a few at my store as well. Anyway, I was looking for daily and monthly behavior charts and did not find any that I was interested in .So I decided to create my very own.  Here it is!

Creative Ways to Encourage Students to Read!

It has been a while since I have blogged, simply because I have been extremely busy! It will take me some time before I can get back in full swing, so let's see what I can do for now.

Creative Ways to Encourage Students to Read

I am always interested in ideas and strategies that can motivate my students to want to read. There are so many great ideas out there that you could try, yet sometimes all it takes is a simply change of strategy.

I came across a few ideas that I am going to put to the test. Maybe you could try them too! Whether it's for your own kids or for your students let's see how we can get them to read!

Here's a link to a pdf file entitled '100 Creative Ways to Excite and Inspire Young Readers'. Click HERE to download.

So let's see what works for our young readers!

Good Writing Skills

I am so excited about introducing two of my latest products. They are 'A Recipe for Good Writing' and 'The Process of Writing Posters'. These writing posters are fantastic for your writing or literacy centers. Of course every teacher wants to help their kids to eventually be able to write competently and independently. For that reason we expose them to the rudiments of good writing. I made these posters as a guide to be displayed in the classroom. The graphics are kid friendly and the font is easy to read. I suggest that these posters are more suited for kindergarten through grade 2. As they progress through elementary school the skills become more complex.

If you wish to get further information on these posters that I offer click the pictures to find them in my TPT store!

Building Literacy Skills Through Storytelling

I found this really fantastic way to help our students link pictures to words, and surprisingly, this is new to me. Now I'm accustomed to teaching them to write stories by giving them the stimuli, maybe a word bank also, then have them build it all the way up, but this is different!

This video from the Teaching Channel shows where the teacher encourages the children to draw their picture then she goes around discussing it with them then she writes the entire story for them. It's like she's the mediator or something. She processes their ideas and makes it available to them in print form. This is a super idea! I can see them learning to read with their own story. This is motivation enough for me!

Anyway, take a look at this amazing video.
