Struggling to Teach Writing Types? Here’s What Helps in K-2

Have you ever asked your students to write an opinion and ended up with a story instead?

Or planned an informative writing lesson, only to see opinions mixed in?

This is something I still see when teaching writing in K-2. Many young writers can write sentences, but they are not always sure what kind of writing they are doing or why. Without clear guidance, writing types can feel confusing and overwhelming.

That’s why I focus on making writing types clear, visual, and easy to remember, and it’s exactly what led me to create the resource I use today.

A Common Need I See With Young Writers

In my classroom, students often wonder:

  • “Is this opinion or a story?”
  • “Am I sharing facts or my thoughts?”
  • “What should my writing sound like?”

Young learners need writing to be clear and visual. Long explanations do not always work. They need simple reminders they can look at while they write.
